What is a surface laser?

Do you want to decrease the visibility of your veins on the surface of your skin? Our board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Matthew Lynch, can provide you with surface laser treatments at Lynch Vein & Aesthetics. He has one of the best lasers for veins on the market today – the Harmony XL PRO laser by Alma. Our surface laser can take on many types of vascular lesions without you having to experience extensive and painful procedures to treat your vein condition. Men and women alike may have red and blue branches of spider veins on their faces to painful, itchy veins down their legs that can be treated with our surface laser.

Because our patients have unique needs, Dr. Lynch makes sure to provide a consultation and examination of presenting veins to see if the surface laser can effectively treat the problem. He will have your best interest in mind when making recommendations. Sometimes, Dr. Lynch offers combination treatments to address specific lesions or multiple groups of veins as they may vary in severity. The Harmony XL PRO laser will safely emit heat to a targeted vein, which will cause the vein to fail. There are no incisions to be made with this type of treatment and no downtime. Request a consultation at Lynch Vein & Aesthetics in Peoria, AZ if you would like to have a surface laser treatment for younger-looking skin.

What are the benefits of a surface laser treatment?

Our surface laser at Lynch Vein & Aesthetics is safe to use on many types of vascular lesions without undergoing an extensive procedure. Treatment is minimally invasive and can improve your appearance and self-confidence at the same time. Because no incisions are involved during the process, you can resume normal activities almost right away. If you're experiencing vein issues, Dr. Lynch can examine the area and determine if this is an appropriate technology for you.

Am I a Candidate for the Surface Laser?

You may be one of the many patients who will qualify for surface laser treatments for their vein issues, but there are a few factors that can make you ineligible:

  • If you have an advanced vascular condition that needs more invasive treatment
  • If you have a medical condition that may be triggered or worsen after a laser treatment
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant soon (treatment may be spread out over time)
  • If you are on certain medications (like a retinoid or Accutane® for severe cystic acne)
  • If you have a pacemaker or any other implanted medical device that can be impacted by the laser

Dr. Lynch will perform a physical examination of your veins, ask you questions about your current health, review the medications you take, and more. He will guide you to the appropriate treatment based on the location, size, depth, severity, and health of the veins.

How does Surface Laser Treatment Work?

When you come into our office at Lynch Vein & Aesthetics, our hope is that you have a comfortable yet productive treatment session. We will take you to one of our minor procedure rooms where the Harmony XL PRO will be set up for your appointment. Before the surface laser session begins, we will prepare your skin with an anesthetic and a conductive gel. We will also ask that you wear the provided eye protection to safeguard your eyes from the laser light. Then, Dr. Lynch will pass the laser over the veins. Once the veins absorb the energy from the laser, the veins should diminish in appearance. Your skin should look and feel smoother, but it can take several sessions and time for you to see your ultimate results.

What is Surface Laser Recovery like?

Your skin may feel irritated after a surface laser treatment. We recommend using a cooling get and/or ice packs to relieve your skin. If you prefer, you can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever to soothe the pain. After your surface laser treatment, Dr. Lynch will send you home with detailed instructions on how to care for yourself. If you are having surface laser treatments on your legs, he may also recommend that you wear compression stockings (knee or thigh-high) for a week or more. There should be no downtime with a surface laser treatment. At your follow-up appointments, we will monitor your veins and make recommendations on further treatments.

Surface laser FAQ

What about over-the-counter options?
Some drugstore products promise to reduce the appearance of unwanted spider veins, but the results are usually temporary, ineffective, or even dangerous to your skin. Cutting-edge laser treatment at Lynch Vein & Aesthetics ensures you receive safe and effective solutions from a trained professional. We want you to look and feel your best without resorting to over-the-counter remedies.

How often should I get laser treatments?
It does take several sessions to achieve the best results. The actual number of appointments needed depends on the severity of your spider veins or lesions and our treatment goals. We recommend you come in for a consultation to discuss your options with Dr. Lynch. Our team also offers follow-up treatments as often as needed.

How long does each laser session take?
Laser sessions are quick, but appointment times vary based on your case and individual plan. We recommend setting aside an hour in our office for your initial consultation and treatment in Peoria, AZ. Patients can then return home or to work shortly after. Remember to follow our recovery instructions closely to maximize your results.

Where can laser vein removal be used?
Spider veins are often found on your face, thighs, lower legs, and near your ankles. In most areas of the face and body, laser vein removal may be an appropriate treatment method. Our state-of-the-art surface laser system uses precision so the nearby tissue and skin is unharmed.

Is laser vein removal painful?
Before your treatment, we usually can put on a numbing cream on your skin. Most patients report feeling a mild tingling or snap when the laser focuses on the target. Most lasers on the market, including ours, have a built-in feature that helps provide a cooling effect. This minimizes discomfort while also preventing the laser from getting too hot, which can result in damage.

Should I get laser vein removal or sclerotherapy?
A treatment with laser vein removal works well for veins of all types and sizes. Depending on your veins, laser vein removal may work better than others depending on your goals. Laser works well on some veins; however, depending on your needs, you might get better results from sclerotherapy, which uses a solution that is injected directly into the vein. Varicose veins respond well to laser vein treatments, but if the vein is larger, surgery might be better. Our team will help you select your treatment method based on your unique needs and goals.
